On the afternoon of May 15, the Shanghai Institute of Immunity and Infection (SIII) hosted its inaugural international exchange salon titled "SIII Dialogue - Exploring, Enlightening". Professor Marcelo Jacobs-Lorena, from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health in the USA, was invited as the keynote speaker. He delivered a presentation on "How to Succeed in Science," attracting many young researchers from both within and outside the institute. Deputy Director Zhang Xiaoming attended and gave opening remarks, while Dr. Huang Wei, Principal Investigator of the Mosquito-borne Disease Transmission Model Study and Blocking Strategy Unit, moderated the event.

Zhang Xiaoming extended a warm welcome to Professor Jacobs-Lorena. He stated that the original purpose of establishing the "SIII Dialogue - Exploring, Enlightening" was to create an international academic exchange platform. By inviting senior international scholars to share insights, the initiative aims to broaden researchers' horizons and stimulate innovative thinking.

Professor Jacobs-Lorena is a fellow of both the American Association for Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the American Academy of Microbiology. His research focuses on the life cycle of the malaria parasite in its obligate mosquito vector, and his laboratory was the first to produce a genetically engineered mosquito that was refractory to the parasite.

Professor Jacobs-Lorena shared his academic journey across different top international research institutes in different countries, offering research experiences and efficient working methods. He emphasized that researchers and students should cultivate an adventurous, open-minded, innovative, and persistent spirit, urging them to set clear goals, commit to focused exploration, and maintain high efficiency during work. His sharing resonated with the participants.

During the Q&A session, Professor Jacobs-Lorena earnestly responded to all questions raised, offering practical suggestions and advice. The active thinking and enthusiastic questioning of the young researchers impressed Professor Jacobs-Lorena deeply, earning his affirmation and praise. The event proceeded in a warm and harmonious atmosphere.

The CAS πφ·Day, a flagship event established under the Chinese Academy of Sciences President’s International Fellowship Initiative (PIFI), aims to strengthen academic exchanges between CAS researchers and global scientific talents. It is dedicated to building intellectual bridges for young scholars to interact with distinguished academics, fostering the international cultivation and development of researchers. This salon, as part of the πφ·Day series, is supported by the PIFI Group Program.
