On May 11, Mrs. Roselyne Bachelot, French Minister of Health and Sports visited Institut Pasteur of Shanghai (IPS), together with Mr. Hervé Ladsous, Ambassador of France in China and Mr. Thierry Mathou, General Consulate of France in Shanghai.

On a brief introduction of IPS, Prof. Ralf Altmeyer, Director General presented IPS’s mission and efforts in creating solutions for a better public health in collaboration with its partners from the public and private sector. As an example of team spirit of IPS, he introduced the creation of a task force at IPS to fight against Hand Foot and Mouth Disease which has infected nearly half a million and killed 260 children in China this year. Prof. Altmeyer stressed that in light of the growing importance of China in the scientific and medical field, exchange between the two countries needs to be enhanced and that IPS was ready to host more French teams.

During the visit of the laboratories, the Minister paid a particular attention to the Pathogen Diagnosis Center (PDC). Prof. LAN Ke, the head of PDC emphasized the national and international collaboration of PDC with CDCs, hospitals and the Institut Pasteur Network in Asia. The expertise on virus identification and characterization would enable development of diagnostic kit, vaccines and therapeutic methods.

The Minister was impressed by the team’s dynamism and humanistic spirit at IPS. She congratulated IPS and its partners on their effort to engage in the fight against Infectious Diseases.
