On 28 January 2004, signature of a letter of intent by the Chinese Academy of Science and Institut Pasteur, in the presence of the Chinese President Hu Jintao, and the French Prime Minister, Jean-Pierre Raffarin, laying out their joint desire to create an Institut Pasteur in Shanghai.
On 30 August 2004, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Municipality of Shanghai, and Institut Pasteur sign a cooperation agreement for the creation of the “Institut Pasteur of Shanghai, Chinese Academy of Sciences.” The agreement is signed in the presence of Mrs Yan Junqi, Vice-Mayor of Shanghai, of Mr. Chen Zhu, Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and of Mr. Philippe Kourilsky, Director General of the Institut Pasteur.
On 10 October 2004, at its first meeting, the Board of Directors of IPS-CAS appoint Prof. Vincent Deubel, a virologist, as Director General, Prof. Jingwu Zang, a neurologist, as Co-Director.
On 11 October 2004, the Institut Pasteur of Shanghai, Chinese Academy of Sciences is inaugurated in the presence of Mr. Jacques Chirac, President of the French Republic, Mr. Chen Zhu, Vice-President of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, Mr. Tang Dengjie, Vice-Mayor of Shanghai and Mr. Philippe Kourilsky, Director General of Institut Pasteur.
The first four research labs open at IPS-CAS. The laboratories are run by principal investigators, previously identified through a selective recruitment Process.
26/04/2006,Appointment to Prof. Bing Sun as New Co-Director
The Board of Directors appoints Prof. Bing Sun, an immunologist, as Co-Director of Institut Pasteur of Shanghai. Prof. Sun succeeds Prof. Jingwu Zang.
01/02/2010, Appointment to Prof. Ralf Altmeyer as New Director General
Prof. Ralf Altmeyer, a Virologist, is appointed as new Director General. Ralf Altmeyer succeeds Vincent Deubel, who was appointed Director General of the Institut Pasteur in Cambodia.
06/2013,IPS moves to its new 16,000 sqm building, in SIBS campus, on Yueyang Road.
The new building was inaugurated by the French President François Hollande; Mr TU Guangshao, Executive vice mayor of Shanghai City; Prof ZHANG Yaping, Vice President of CAS.
